Reflection

For the spring 2019 semester, one of the classes that I took was Writing for Engineering, 21007 with professor Adam Bobrow. The writing for engineering course the work that I did throughout the semester was fascinating. Bobrow gives us a student assignment that would prepare us for the real world. Each assignment helped us in various ways which we could apply in our future profession. In class other than writing assignment we did other circular things, for instance,  grammar quist and writing a short paragraph of paper associated with the assignment that we did in class.  Each of these circular things helped me to improve my English writing. We student was assigned six major papers to write throughout the semester, resume, informational interview, lab report, group proposal, and a technical description. Each of these assignments parped me for the real world and I learned something different from each of these assignments.

One of the first thing we did at the beginning of the class is introducing ourself by writing things in the flashcard. I liked this assignment because it’s helped me to make friends in the class. We talk about things we like, what year of college, two facts and one lie and our major. By doing this activity I got to learn more about my classmates and professor Bobrow. After that, We did an assignment on the blackboard which is to write an intro paragraph about ourselves. Where I had to introduce myself to my colleague. my classmate and I posted the intro paragraph about ourselves.  After writing the intro paragraph I learned more about my classmates such as which high school they attended, their background story, and what is their hobbies. I like this assignment because it helps me out in a group proposal because of the intro paragraph I was able to choose a good teammate to work with for my fourth assignment.

The second assignment that we did in our class is to write a resume and cover letter. The goal of this assignment was to create a resume to apply for an internship associated with my major computer science which I found in indeed.com. The resume that I wrote which provided my education background, work experience, quality, and skills. This assignment was very important in my opinion because the resume that I wrote in the class would help me to get an internship throughout my college year. It’s very important to do an internship in college which I can show in when I apply for a job after graduating from a college. It also helped me to prepare for my job resume and cover letters.  Professor Bobrow instructed us clearly what we should put in our resume and what we should not put for example one of the things he said if the GPA is about 3.3 we can show it in our resume but if it is below it’s better not to talk about the GPA in the resume.

After submitting my resume the next assignment was about an information interview. Which required me to find someone who is working in the same field as mine computer science and interview them about how they become a computer scientist. Before we interview the person we had to write down the question that is appropriate to ask and some question that is not. For instance, asking about their personal life or relationship between their co-workers these types of questions is not ask. Once we decide to ask what type of question we posed on the blackboard, from there the class can exchange information and choose the best question to ask. The question that I ask included which college they attended,  What internship they did, Where do they work, what’s their first job, how much they write, and what type of advice they have from me. I learned so much thing from this informative interview about computer science what it likes to work in the CS field. The person that I interview gave me some advice such as learning more programing language can help me to get an internship and it’s good for the resume. This assignment was a reminder of what is my next step should be to become successful as the person that I interview and how close I am to achieve my goal.

Another assignment that came after writing a resume and information interview which is a lab report. This assignment was to experiment on a pair of dice the probability of dice. The Dice rolling experiment allows me to understand how probabilities work. The Idea of this experiment is to roll a pair of dice 100 times and record the data for each trail. Then I have to experiment by collecting all the data to determine something that I want to prove from the data. I made an educational guess I said the number that is most like to be repeated is number seven however after conducting my experiment I was proved wrong because the pair of dice is bell curve graph. I had to go to The City College of New York online databases to find two other similar studies about a pair of dice and compared them with my own research. This assignment was one of my favorites because it made me think and helped me be more creative. For instance, instead of rolling dice 100 times I created a program to do. Instead of 100 times, I can run the program to do as much as I want so I can get a more accurate number by during more trail which eliminates the random number appearance.

After my resume, lab report and the Informational Interview, professor Bobrow introduces us to our next topic, which is a request for a proposal. It’s a group assignment where we have work with three to four people in a group assignment.  The assignment was to talk about the issues around the City College of New York; Choose a topic and make a plan to improve that issue. My group and I decide to install sprinklers in The City College of New York due to a lack of fire protection. We decided to start our project with the Shapard hall because it is historic and wonder of The City College of New York. The Shapard hall is the first campus on City College of New York and according to our research, it the least expensive in CCNY campus to install the sprinklers. We estimated the cost is around 200,000$ to 250,000$. Installing Sprinklers can save many lives and minimize fire destruction in case of a fire disaster.  The group proposal helped me learn how to collaborate with my group members to get the assignment at hand completed. Group proposal helps me to experience what it might be like to work with other people. Something that I have to face in the future at my workplace, I have to work in a group so this task prepares me for the real world.

Finally, The last assignment that I was assigned a technical description.  Which is to choose a topic related to my major computer science. I have to research the topic and present it in front of the class. For example, my topic was a cell phone I had to describe how the cell phone works. I did a research and found out the cell phone use radio waves to send a signal as a digital code when someone call and the cell tower decode and transmit the information to the device that they are calling. As technology improves communicating between people improved as well. During the 20th century, the phone was not capable of long-distance communication but as the technology improved. From 1G to 4G(LTE) now we can able to talk to people not just only by calling, texting messages, and video calling. I am looking forward to work in the cell phone company to make a faster and better communication connection by improving its code.

Writing for engineering class went very fast the amount of work that we did help me to have a better idea of the real world. This class was not like every other class in this class I learned something valuable is that I did not work all the assignment just for the grade I also did it to learn and I was curious about most of the topic that professor Bobrow brought up. Throughout the whole semester by providing amusement through the class. Every day I go to that class I feel very happy because there is positive energy coming from everyone we all laugh together, to be honest, I had lot’s of fun in writing for engineering class than I did in other I took in The City College of New York. I learn in this class many important things such as writing a resume, what it’s like to be a computer scientist, how to work with other people and communication skills
